Victim Mentality

Victim mentality: it’s always someone else’s fault. I was watching Intervention last night when a concerned family member of an addict said this. It struck me as deeply insightful and terribly moving. Not because I’ve never heard the general thought or idea before. I mean, as a psych major we talk about things like Learned Helplessness and self-empowerment all the time. I have, on more than one occasion, reminded a friend that the whole world isn’t against them, and that if they choose to see the world as a universal whole that is always conspiring to screw them over then that is exactly what they’ll find. But I don’t know…I guess maybe it’s the person and the situation that this was spoken about that really made the difference.

Let me explain. You see, the addict this was said about is (more…)

Ruby Rant: Don’t Waste My *$%#@^&@*@&$% Time

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…I’ve accepted that the world doesn’t revolve around me. And if it doesn’t revolve around me, it sure as hell doesn’t revolve around you. I don’t know why this concept is so difficult for people to understand, to wrap their minds around. You should always make yourself a priority, of course. Take care of you and what’s important to you, etc. etc.: but that DOESN’T mean the cost of your happiness should be at the expense of someone else. And just because you’re not stealing from someone, or exploiting them, or causing some kind of bodily harm to them doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Because, honestly, just like your (more…)

Fake Cancer? Can Anyone Say “Dirt-Bag”?

I have been hearing about this girl over the past week I was away, and although she makes me sick I keep perusing the reports. Mostly because I just want to know why. Why on earth did you do this, how could you? I still have yet to find that answer (and don’t suppose I’ll find a decent one ever, after all, what answer is there that would satisfy anyone?) but I did stumble across this article. Check it out and then you can read my personal response to it.

News: Should we have sympathy for the girl who faked cancer?

Hundreds of charitable people have been duped into donating money to a woman who allegedly faked a cancer diagnosis—but some people on Facebook are saying she should be forgiven. (more…)

Slam Saturdays: She

Sorry, for some reason this post did not go out yesterday like it was supposed to. Better late than never, especially for this piece. The poet gives an intro to her piece, so I’ll let her do the speaking for me.

*edit* apparently this poem link is dead, and I’m having some trouble finding it. But, as soon as I do I’ll have the updated link added to the post. Sorry y’all

Cheers

Self Confidence

Your pathetic attempt at appearing self-assured is a waste of time. Not only is it not working, but nobody really cares. Try being authentic for a change. Try ACTUALLY believing in yourself for once. Spend more time loving you instead of pretending you’re loveable.

The thing about self confidence is, if you don’t have it, no matter how hard you try you just can’t fake it. Sure, you can pretend to be the self confident diva or dude, walk around with your head up, shoulders back and attempt to radiate “I believe in ME” vibes. But more often than not your false confidence will come off as cocky at best. Or lame, like you’re trying waaaayyyy too hard. At worst you come off as (more…)

The Drake Concert Was PHENOMENAL

Actually, that doesn’t even quite sum it up. Unfortunately, without resulting to nonsense words, I don’t have a better word to describe it, so phenomenal will just have to do. After the stupendous time (is it grammatically correct to describe your time as stupendous? Hmmmm…well, I just wanted to use the word really :-p) at Caribana, I figured that yeah, the Drake concert would be awesome, but I’d probably have just as good a time at both events. Damn was I ever wrong! I don’t think I’ve ever had such a good time as I did at the Drake concert…and I’m not even over-exaggerating. 😀

Of course…why don’t you check out a lil’ sneak preview before I continue…it’s only fair! And to clarify exactly which concert I’m talking about, this was the Drake Concert, OVO Fest, on August 1, 2010 at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre (more…)

Slam Saturdays: Biracial Hair

Yes, I’m late. I get that. I apologize, but Caribana Brain totally killed any hope of this post being on time. But better late than never, no? Actually, with the Drake concert today (which I am very excited to say I will be going to) I’m shocked I remembered to get it out at all! LOL. OK, so the original link of this video is right here in case you want to check out the original, maybe subscribe to the vids. But with all my technical finesse I found you the video! This young lady has style and class, and addresses this issue in such an upbeat, funny and seriously real way. Take a few minutes out to watch it…you won’t be disappointed.

See, it was amazing, wasn’t it?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend y’all. And enjoy this random long weekend for the “civic holiday” (whatever that is! I don’t care…my birthday falls on the long weekend…who am I to complain that it’s not even a real holiday?!?!! LOL)

Cheers
