Slam Sundays: You Will Never Be Pretty

The sting of those nasty words can last a lifetime. Be careful what you say, especially to those young, impressionable minds you are charged with raising.

I personally have always found the term ‘pretty’, when applied to me, to be rather insulting. As in, “just pretty??!?”. Ok, so I have a healthy level of self-confidence, bordering on being downright vain. I swear to you it’s not my fault – it’s genetic. I come from a long line of terribly vain people, a whole family of people who will swear up and down that we are made solely from “beautiful genes”.

A wonderful example of this was the time I was walking with my uncle into a mall. Looking at his muscular calves, I happened to notice they were smooth as a babies bottom. Being about 9 years old at the time, my inquisitive nature was in full bloom. “Uncle?”, I asked, at the top of my lungs, I might add, “how come you shave your legs?”. Now, being part of my conceited family, there was no hushing, or lowered tones. Nope. Instead, he answered just as loudly, “You see these sexy, muscular calves? They are irresistible…and when I want the women to come and fawn around me, all I have to do is this!”, and he stuck his calf out, and pointed with both hands…in the middle of the parking lot, clearly disrupting traffic.

So, since that isn’t even a rare example of one of my family members, or a vanity situation, it’s no wonder I subconsciously deem myself to be above simply “pretty”. Like how, whenever someone tells my mom that her daughter is beautiful, she says (more…)

Slam Sundays: On Feminism/Feminazis

image

Since last week, and after several posts I’ve written (check them out here and here), I’ve been doing quite a lot of thinking on what feminists really mean to me. So hey, why not make my first Slam Sundays back ALLLLLL about feminists? Ok, so this first one, I think, kinda illustrates exactly what drives the feminazi to her extremes. Her original commitment to feminism wasn’t all about nitpicking and taking offense to clearly inoffensive things, or calling “misogyny!” on anything that has anything to do with women, unless a feminist said it. No. However, this satyric Slam Poem may help you understand the f&$#*# up thinking and rationale that can be encountered after claiming “feminist”, and why their back is up and they feel the need to war, fight, and defend every moment of every woman’s existence…even when, upon some time and rational thought, they’d probably realize that some of those wars really have nothing to do with their cause. Like how the weapons of mass destruction search really had nothing to do with anything but hijacking some oil.

Seems extreme, no? But I have personally heard some very stupid men say almost the exact same thing, when referring to feminists (not feminazi’s..but true feminists)…and when referring to lesbians. Ok, so this next video

Slam Saturdays: Biracial Hair

Yes, I’m late. I get that. I apologize, but Caribana Brain totally killed any hope of this post being on time. But better late than never, no? Actually, with the Drake concert today (which I am very excited to say I will be going to) I’m shocked I remembered to get it out at all! LOL. OK, so the original link of this video is right here in case you want to check out the original, maybe subscribe to the vids. But with all my technical finesse I found you the video! This young lady has style and class, and addresses this issue in such an upbeat, funny and seriously real way. Take a few minutes out to watch it…you won’t be disappointed.

See, it was amazing, wasn’t it?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend y’all. And enjoy this random long weekend for the “civic holiday” (whatever that is! I don’t care…my birthday falls on the long weekend…who am I to complain that it’s not even a real holiday?!?!! LOL)

Cheers

Slam Saturdays: Hope

And who better to deliver this message of hope to us but the children: the hope of the future. I really needed a message of hope today, after my hospital stay delivered little, if any, of it. I hope it is as uplifting to you as it was to me.

Have a great weekend y’all!

Cheers

Slam Saturdays: On Sex

https://classicruby.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/sex.jpg?w=232Hey y’all

I know I’ve been scarce this week, and I apologize. All the agonizing and preparing for my 5 day hospital stay starting this coming Monday has clearly been affecting me more than I thought it was, because boy has time flown! But neither rain, nor hail, nor personal catastrophe can get me to forget about my beloved Slam Saturdays. This weekend, I’ve got a special one lined up for you. Since we’ve been talking all about sex his past couple weeks, I thought I’d keep up the theme for Slam Saturdays. Now, I know you’ve already gotten a little dose of Spoken Word Sex from the gorgeous Laith’s Brain Sex, but here are a few more that I think will do this topic justice. Enjoy (more…)

Slam Saturdays: Poetic Asylum

In the bible somewhere I believe it says that the youth shall lead us…or something like that. All I know is that in society the youth are not given the credit that they deserve on many levels. One thing is that they aren’t stupid: they notice just as much about the world around them as we do, and they care just as much that it’s going to hell in a handbasket. A young man is telling us to ‘open our eyes’ to what’s going on in our world today, try and stand for something, or we’re going to start falling for any and every thing. You gotta check this one out, it’s one of them (more…)

Slam Saturdays: Mind Sex

OK, first of all, I just wanna say that I did NOT pick this poem because the speaker (Laith) happens to be too sexy for words. Hand to God, I didn’t. Ok, MAAYYYBE I decided to WATCH the video because the still image of him, even in what would have been an awkward pose for someone else was positively captivating…and maybe, just maybe I managed to sit through the first 1/3 of the video where he introduces himself only because I couldn’t stop watching his lips speak, couldn’t help but watch the sexy yet innocent glint in his eye, trying to determine why it is that he seemed to be some creature decended directly from God’s special batch of sexually irresistible beings…

Sorry, what was I saying again?

Oh yeah… (more…)

Slam Saturdays: At 13

I stumbled upon this one today while actually looking for a completely different artist. Never heard of him before, never heard of the poem before, but all I could say while listening was “damn he’s good!”. I seriously got chills while listening to the man speak. I seriously took his words to heart, listened to the message within the message, let it get deep into my soul…and that was all before the end, when they explained the little details that finally made it come together for me: this was so honest, so pure, so real, and so deep. It was an experience for me. I hope it ends up being the same for you. (more…)

Slam Saturdays: Introduction

Hey Y’all! Welcome to my very first episode of Slam Saturdays! Because this is the very first one, ever, I decided to give you a brief explanation as to what to expect on these days. First off, with the exception of some brief explanations or maybe the occasional relating anecdote, Slam Saturdays are gonna have relatively little written opinion or direction from me. I’ve been in to Spoken Word poetry for about a decade now, and one thing I have always found is that another person’s explanation or introduction to the poem or poet often does it (or them) little to no justice. So I won’t even bother wasting your or my time with such things.

Secondly, I wanted you all to understand exactly why it is that I’m introducing this weekly feature to my blog. Unlike all the other features I have introduced (like Ruby Rants or Classic Contemplations, for example) this will actually be a feature you see each and every week, each and every Saturday. The reason? (more…)
