Is It OK to Assume People Never Change? (High School Reunions)

i-have-changed-t-shirtsOver the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to reconnect with several friends that I haven’t seen in a while (anywhere from 6 months to about 4 years ago). It’s been a whirlwind: not only has it been exciting and fun and refreshing, but because it was all so compacted and I had so many reunions to process, it’s only now that I have a few moments alone without some new adventure involving bits from my life long past looming in the near future that I have been able to really appreciate some of the little details from these encounters.

And no, as much as I’m sure you’re all thinking “What’s Ruby’s gripe now?” since I always seem to have one, I am actually NOT going to complain about the people, places, or things, nor am I going to criticize anybody or anything. I swear. Actually (more…)

Classic Ruby's Guest Appearance on The Imperfect Enjoyment Blog

classic-ruby-wine-glassClassic Ruby has finally made it to the top!! I have graciously obliged Dewan Gibson, Author of The Imperfect Enjoyment (book review coming soon) and submitted a guest blog post which was collaborated with several other extremely talented bloggers/authors (including Dewan’s as-usual hilarious two cents), peppered with relevant and diverse music video footage, and made into one mammoth collection of fatasticism!

Those of you who already have me on Twitter or Facebook I’m sure have already spent at least hours gazing in amazement at the awesomeness, but for those of you who have yet to have the pleasure (what are you waiting for, silly people, join in on the Twitter and Facebook Classic Ruby Train already!! lol) I thought I would provide the link to the splendiferous article.

As this is my first ever in life guest blog (and boy was I terrified as hell about it…I spent at least 55 hours agonizing over what in the WORLD to write that wouldn’t make me sound amateur and pathetic when compared to the professionals, when my only guidance was “This might be something long-term if…” That’s it. Like, seriously? OK, we all know I need to be hand-held through ANY assignment…I don’t know how I managed to make it out alive, but somehow it got done :-p) please be nice while mentally evaluating me!

Seriously, check it out though, cause Mr. Gibson did a fantabulous job! (yes, I am in the mood for wonderful little nonsense words. So sue me! LOL…)

Cheers

Step-Monsters: Murder or Make-Up? (not seriously)

back-to-back-angryNot for anything, but when your mother gets married to some dude she’s known for a whole year when you’re 24 years old, the man she married doesn’t become your step daddy. He becomes your mama’s husband. Even if we grew to love each other to death (currently am NOT seeing that happening but who knows what strange twists fate will bring), I would simply out of respect tell people that he was my stepfather. But seriously? In my heart of hearts he would be my mother’s husband. He just would: I’m grown now, I don’t have any need for step parents, especially not ones introduced into my life during my adulthood. In fact, I barely have any need for “parenting” at all. When you hit your mid twenties, your parents morph from the role of “guardian” to that of “friend” (if you’re lucky…if not, shit gets seriously messed up -but that’s for another day) (more…)

Hip Hop Away From Violence program

Anybody who knows me knows that I want to be a psychologist with all my heart and soul. Only people who know me well know what my true, deep desires are (I lie; only people who have asked me know…oh, and people who have been around when I was in the mood to talk about it…OH and random strangers listening to bar talk…but then I digress). ANYWAY, so what my goal in life is, what I really want to do with all my expertise, is open up a centre.

I want this centre to be a positive outlet for youth, a place where they can go and have positive and worthwhile experiences, where they can explore and develop their talents and natural gifts. But I also want this to be a place where the youth can come and get free services that they need, 100% confidentially and money free. Services including medical, psychiatric, psychological, legal, money management, tutoring, etc. etc. And every time I see or hear about anyone on the path to attaining my dream I always feel rays of joy and sunshine pouring out of me.

Here’s one group that a friend shared with me that is seriously making a difference! Kudos guys!! Check out this video y’all. And support the cause: visit their website www.unitycharity.com

Kudos on this one guys! I am SO inspired! Gotta keep on trucking, get to this Ph.D. for sure now!

Hope you were all as inspired as I was.

Cheers

Classic Contemplations: On Doctors

incompetent-doctorWhy is it that people always think the worst of each other? Why is it that we can’t look at people and assume positive attributes before we automatically jump to negative conclusions? And I’m not just talking about peer relationships here: Why is it that when I go in to the doctor he wants to assume that either I am a hypochondriac, a liar trying to pull a fast one, or a drug addict trying to get high, before it ever occurs to him to look at me as though I am actually an ill person? Somebody who is validly in pain, validly sick and in need of medical care? What in the world have I done, what has there been in my behaviour to deserve this? So far as everyone I know has told me, absolutely nothing. But it seems to be only the doctors who have this issue…nurses are sympathetic and understanding, and seem genuinely to care about all the pain, all the ailments. A pharmacist called me today, of her own volition, to advise me on something we had (briefly) spoken about. Just because she cared (more…)

Maybe It’s Them: But It’s Probably You, Too

not-meFirst off, I would like to say that this post has been inspired by a post I have been reading and following on another blog, Naked With Socks On. This topic ended up being so fiery, so inflammatory, that the last I checked after only a few days it has topped the most commented on post I have ever laid eyes on. Last I checked it was at 190 comments!. Anyway, the post was specifically aimed at analyzing one woman’s comment to another post he had made earlier in the week. The woman, he said, clearly suffered from Angry Woman Syndrome, and was more than a wee bit jaded when it came to the topic of men and sex. And seriously, it was QUITE obviously that this woman had had some seriously jacked up experiences with men – more specifically, only seemed to find men interested in ONE thing, which was especially problematic for her as she was saving herself for marriage. The commenter of focus, Shannon, does end up responding, and getting into quite a few (more…)

Would You Kill For Someone You Love?

These two were jailed and charged for attacking the intruders who had their family tied up and at gunpoint...I know, WTF?!?!? A link to their full story can be found below

When discussing those we love, the discussion often turns to talk involving how far we would go to protect and defend them. These philosophical debates begin early in life, while hanging out with your gradeschool chums, perhaps at a sleepover, playing truth or dare you ask the “truth” taker “If there was a building on fire and you could only save one person, who would you save, your brother or your sister?”. Sure, at that age your answer depends more on who has pissed you off less in the past few weeks, that you can remember, than about who you “love” more or who “matters” to you more. Remember when those questions started your gears really turning though? When the choice between your two best friends became a topic that couldn’t be so easily answered, that (more…)

Valentine's Day: Past and Present

valentines_dayBeing that yesterday was Valentine’s Day, I thought it would be only proper if Classic Ruby acknowledge the day. Forget that it’s not actually a holiday. Forget that the only significance the day has is to the consumerism in society…a day we don’t even pretend is based on anything other than chocolate, flowers, restaurants, and a need to show up your friends with your romantic stories (“oh yeah? Well MY man loves ME more because he got me 24 karats AND a romantic cruise on a yacht””Yeah well my man knows I appreciate the little things in life so he would NEVER waste my time with that. He brought me to this romantic villa restaurant instead where I could….”insert romantic amazingness here). Forget all the negatives of the day itself, Classic Ruby should acknowledge the day, if never again, because it’s my first year, and in my first year everything is important! No matter how little I care. Lol. (more…)

Miracle In Haiti: Rescued After 30 Days!!!

haiti-survivorAs I’m sure you’ve noticed, I have pretty much said nil in regards to the earthquake in Haiti (or any other natural disaster that has occurred in the recent past). There are several reasons for this, number one is because quite frankly I don’t bother with the news and as a result wouldn’t be the most well informed person to speak about it. A close second is because everyone and their mom has covered the quake from EVERY possible angle imaginable, so what would the point be of me simply reiterating what everyone else has said a billion times before in the past month.

However, when I stumbled across this particular article in (more…)

Classic Contemplations: Introduction

contemplatingAs you’ve probably noticed, I have been in the process of slowly but surely implementing some new ideas, so that Classic Ruby (now accessible via ClassicRuby.com!!!) can be more than simply a journal for my thoughts and grievances. I mean, realistically, if its just the same old, same old each and every day, where’s the excitement in that? I want to keep you guys guessing “what’s Ruby gonna come up with next?”, and titillate those big, beautiful brains of yours! So without further ado, I bring you Classic Ruby Contemplations!!

Classic Ruby Contemplations, or Classic Contemplations for short, are going to be extremely short and sweet. It’ll be a series of (more…)
